DIY, Custom Entertainment Center Ikea Hack

Ikea Hack Entertainment Center from Billy Bookcase

Hello All,

Thanks for stopping by today. I recently took on a big design project for a new client. I can’t wait to show you some of the design elements we are going to do for them. This awesome family has 4 young kids and needs storage and custom built-ins. I’m starting with the loft and creating an entertainment center that fits a 70″ Flat screen TV as well as a large desk / office space. Some great ways to save money on your built-ins is to buy the cabinetry and book shelves from Ikea. I will show you how to use various Ikea pieces to make a custom entertainment center on a budget. The total cost of this project was under $500

I started with using 2 Billy bookcases $49.99 each and 1 Besta TV unit $69.99 and 1 Besta single cabinet $50 and 3 doors. Cost at Ikea $250

In order to trim out the bottom I built a frame out of 2×4’s and raised the Besta’s. Tip- Make sure you don’t screw the Besta TV unit down to the frame. You will need to be able to move it forward to run the wires later. Mount the single Besta to the frame as it will not need to be moved.

After securing the bookcases and cabinets to the wall and frame (excluding the Besta TV unit) I added 2×4’s to the top as support for a header. The header is 3/4 inch Maple Wood cut to 16.5″ by 8′. You will need a second piece in order to span the entire top. Cost for wood in this step $60

I also screwed in an additional piece of maple board under the 2×4’s that were used to support the header. It conceals the hole through the top. Next I wanted to add trim and crown molding. I used case molding for the bottom trim line and I added a top board to mount the crown to. Cost for all molding and boards $68

After securing the top board and making sure everything is level, I nailed in a thick crown molding.

To make this really feel built-in, I used the same floor board as the existing room had and ran it around the base of the unit.IMG_0895

Now that all the cutting is done you can put away your building tools and do some finishing work. I used a white paintable caulk to fill the minor cracks. Use some spackle for the nail holes and let dry. Last I painted the whole unit with specialty paint from Sherwin Williams designed specifically for cabinets and moldings.. The color matches the Ikea Billy bookcases perfectly. Cost for misc materials $25 & paint $69.  The total cost to build this unit is $475. Now that is a great value if you ask me.

Once the paint is dry you can style the cabinets and run the TV wires behind the Besta TV unit.

Styled Entertainment Center

To bring the room together I used a gorgeous area rug from One Kings Lane  Yass Rug, Ivory/Gray  and a white sectional couch. I love decorating with designer coffee table books. Chanel: The Vocabulary of Style and  Louis Vuitton / Marc Jacobs sit on these simple yet elegant gold nesting tables. We found some great accessories at world market and home goods for the shelves. To showcase your shelving try mounting some puck lights. We went with some battery-powered Led puck lights from Home Depot.
